“Give me the remote, you have no idea what you’re doing,” Fox said, snatching a little black rectangle from Lightning’s hand.

“It’s my last night of technology, I want to watch something enjoyable.”

“Me, too, and you have shitty taste in TV shows. I mean, sitcoms, Light, really?”

“Fine. Just no horror movies. Please,” he groaned.

“Wuss.”

I stared around the room, taking it all in. We were in the den of Osborne’s house, though it was far more welcoming than I had ever seen it. It sported the same off-white walls and plush brown carpeting, but on the wall before us was a large TV hooked up to a couple devices that looked to me like game consoles. A lamp in the corner and the TV screen provided the only light, turning the room warm and cozy. A curtain pushed askew in front of one of the windows revealed the dark of night outside. We were gathered around the couch and armchair that I was used to. Griffin and Fox had taken spots on the couch, Griffin with one arm loosely around her and Fox leaning into him, casually and silently claiming each other. It was far more than they’d shown around the rest of us, though even without it their feelings were clear. Though there was room for another person beside them Lightning had opted for the floor in front of the couch and Rowan had taken the chair, sitting with her feet tucked up beneath her and a book in her lap. I was sitting on the floor as well, just to the left of the couch. On the TV, shows flickered past until Fox settled on one, something I didn’t recognize but was in the midst of an action scene.

And I had absolutely no idea why we were all here or what they were talking about. I almost asked aloud, but then realized how different this scene felt from my normal world.

I was dreaming.

So I kept quiet, watching. I knew from experience my dreams weren’t frivolous or meaningless. This was going to tell me something.

“So, tomorrow’s the big day,” Griffin spoke up as Fox nestled closer to him, leaning her head on his shoulder. “Who’s nervous?”

Fox scoffed. “We go in, we scavenge for a few days, we come back. What’s there to be nervous about?”

“You’re saying you’re not the slightest bit worried about having your entire memory wiped and being dumped back...there?” Lightning asked skeptically, looking up at her.

She shrugged. “Are you?”

“Hell yeah.”

“It’s only temporary, Lightning,” Rowan told him, glancing up from her book. “It’ll be fine. SAM won’t let anything go wrong, she’ll put things straight and bring us back.”

“I don’t see why we’re going at all,” he muttered, leaning against the front of the couch and training his eyes straight ahead on the TV. “Why can’t she take care of whatever mysterious problem she’s having with us here?”

“It’s not just about that, it’s a reset,” I told him, the words flowing out of me without my even thinking them. I had no idea where they came from but I didn’t dare try to stop them.
